Lotus Blossom Collection

The Lotus Blossom Collection comprises four intricately detailed illustrated surface design patterns for interior living spaces. These designs draw from nature, history, and symbolic tradition.

This series of patterns for wallpaper and homewares was inspired by observations of the lotus plant in its natural environment as well as symbolic associations. The blossom emerging from the mud has been used as a symbol for non-attachment, enlightenment, and transcendence within Dharmic religious traditions and within schools of Chinese philosophy. In addition to its use as a symbolic teaching device, the lotus blossom is also often employed in religious art and iconography from these traditions. Each colorway references the flowers in their natural environment while also containing symbolic meaning. My designs are intended to provide latitude for both symbolic and naturalistic associations.

Eudaimonia

The principle pattern of the Lotus Blossom series Eudaimonia embodies full flourishing vibrance. This intricately detailed illustration articulates the upward blossoming growth of the plant emerging from the murky depths into the light of day. The harmonious structure of the pattern echoes the naturalistic form of the plant through the carefully balanced yet organic design. The ornamental repetition brings the sense of nature indoors while providing a supporting the living space with understated architectural structure.

Traveler

Nature, architecture and esoteric imagery inform the geometric Traveler pattern. Traveler draws inspiration from the ingenious biomimicry of the Victorian horticulturist-turned-architect Joseph Paxton’s 1853 design of the monumental Crystal Palace which imitates the Victoria Amazonica water lily in both structure and form. The semi-circular repetitions echo the lotus leaf while also suggesting layered rose-window like domes. This tranquil design draws from the tradition of visual meditative devices such as Yantra and Mandala artwork as it invites gazing and cultivates a sense of repose.

 Anahata Colorstory

The vibrant palette of the Anahata colorway derives from the lotus in its natural environment with a nod to symbolic associations. The pinks and greens used are also associated with the anahata heart chakra. Conventionally represented as a twelve-petaled lotus icon in pink or green, the anahata chakra is associated with compassion and loving kindness in the Vedic philosophical tradition.
